Since its founding in 1988, SNAP has supported tens of thousands of survivors, exposed thousands of abusers in the United States and around the world, and played a pivotal role in changing the laws that once prevented victims from seeking justice.
SNAP’s advocacy has been instrumental in achieving landmark reforms, including changes to statutes of limitation that have allowed countless survivors to seek justice for the first time. A defining moment came in 2002, when the Boston Globe’s groundbreaking Spotlight investigation exposed the systemic, decades-long cover-up of child sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Boston. That reporting, alongside the relentless advocacy of survivors, caused a public reaction that forced the Vatican to rewrite canon law in the United States, leading to the removal of thousands of abusive clergy from ministry.
Our stories, whether covered by major international outlets or local newspapers, have the power to inspire survivors to come forward, seek support, and demand justice. At SNAP, we recognize the profound impact the media has in seeking the truth and shining a light on abuse. When the truth is told, society is changed.
