Fired Catholic school teacher charged with molesting tutoring student faces battery accusation in Evergreen Park

A tutor and substitute teacher was in court on Friday, charged with inappropriately touching a child he was tutoring in Orland Park. He’s also been charged with inappropriately touching a student he was teaching in Evergreen Park.

Orland Park police have said Brett Smith, 43, of Tinley Park, has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse. According to the charges, he inappropriately touched a 9-year-old boy he was tutoring.

Evergreen Park police also have charged him with battery. Those charges accuse him of making unwanted physical contact with a child at Queen of Martyrs school earlier this month by placing his hand on the student’s hand while standing behind him, and pressing himself against the boy’s back while he was at school.

Smith, who spent 16 months as a substitute teacher and tutor for Chicago Catholic Schools, was fired by the Chicago Archdiocese earlier this week, after officials learned of his long history of child molestation allegations.

Smith has changed his name multiple times, and has been arrested many times before and accused of touching his students, but has never been convicted of a felony.

In the case in Orland Park, prosecutors said Smith posted a listing on Nextdoor, identifying himself as BJ S. McAuliffe, a private tutor for hire.

Parents of a 9-year-old boy interviewed Smith and hired him the same day. He tutored their son at their Orland Park home more than a dozen times

Originally, the parents paid for the sessions in cash, but when they swapped to Zelle, they were confused to see the account linked to the name Brett Smith.

The boy’s father looked up Smith online and found an extensive criminal history, which prosecutors also outlined in court.

Prosecutors said the boy told his parents that his tutor would rub his back under his shirt while he was reading.

The parents found Smith was also formerly known as Brett Zagorac, and worked in at least four Catholic schools in the Chicago area over the last 16 months. The Chicago Archdiocese fired him on Monday and said they were not aware of any sexual misconduct allegations against him.

He was also previously accused of similar conduct in Arizona and Indiana.

In Arizona, that state’s attorney general has accused smith of legally changing his name to hide his past in 2021.

He was never convicted of a felony in these cases. Many times, the state argued, not because the crimes didn’t happen, but for other reasons — in some instances, young victims chose not to testify against Smith.

The judge in the Orland Park case ordered Smith detained until his next court date, saying, “Quite frankly, Mr. Smith, enough is enough.”

Smith is also facing a civil lawsuit from the family of a 2nd grade student at Queen of Martyrs, although it’s unclear if that’s the same victim he’s facing a battery charge for in Evergreen Park.

The lawsuit accuses Smith of grooming the boy and touching him inappropriately, including rubbing his buttocks and pressing his own body against the boy’s while he was seated at his desk.

The family also accuses the Archdiocese of negligence in hiring Smith, saying they should have known about his background of child molestation allegations.

In the filing, attorneys wrote “a simple Google search reveals credible evidence of SMITH’s sexual misconduct, occurring in multiple states. Therefore, a proper background search would further reveal such misconduct.”

Officials at the archdiocese asked anyone whose child has had contact with Smith that makes them uncomfortable to call their local police department or the DCFS Hotline (1.800.25.ABUSE). They can also contact the Archdiocese Office for the Protection of Children and Youth at 312-534-5254.

Orland Park police also asked anyone who believes they, their child, or a child under their care might have been a victim of Smith to contact their local police department.

Benin pastor arrested over alleged sexual abuse of minors

The founder of Rollo Life of Christ Brethren Ministry in Benin, Bishop Gideon Osagie Osazee, has been arrested by the Edo State Government over allegations of sexual abuse involving two biological sisters.

The two sisters told investigators that they were aged 13 and 17 at the time the alleged incidents occurred. In addition, four other girls have reportedly come forward with similar allegations against the cleric, which he has denied.

Officials said Osazee was arrested after several days of surveillance by the state government.

The elder of the two sisters, who said she is now 21, alleged that the incident occurred while she was asleep. She told investigators that she later realised the suspect was her pastor and alleged that she was threatened not to disclose the incident.

The younger sister said she was 13 years old at the time of the alleged abuse.

Osazee denied the allegations, stating that he had a consensual relationship with the elder sister, whom he claimed told him she was 21 years old at the time. He also said he intended to marry her.

The Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugene Abdullah, said other children from the church had spoken out about alleged sexual harassment by the suspect. She said the matter would be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Edo State Police Command for prosecution.

Also speaking, Faith Edebor of the Vivian Sexual Assault Referral Centre said preliminary investigations supported the accounts given by the victims.

Kansas Pastor Allegedly Kidnapped Teen Girl at Gunpoint Before Sexually Assaulting Her

Police in Jasper County, Missouri, arrested a pastor from Parsons, Kansas, after he allegedly held a 16-year-old girl at gunpoint and sexually assaulted her.

Joshua Price has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, two counts of armed criminal action, first-degree sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of a minor, according to Jasper County court records.

A probable cause affidavit obtained by KAKE stated that officers responded to the report of a sexual assault on November 3, 2025, that took place earlier in the day.

The victim told police she left a friend’s home and decided to walk to another friend’s house in Joplin when she got bored and decided to turn around. While she was near the intersection of 7th Street and Moffet Avenue, a vehicle with Kansas plates pulled up to the teenager and asked the victim if she needed a ride.

After she told the driver that she did not need a ride, the man allegedly pulled out a handgun and ordered her to get into the car. She followed his orders, and he drove them to Schifferdecker Park.

Price, 37, allegedly took pictures of the girl before he ordered her to get into the backseat of the vehicle. He then allegedly threatened her with the gun and tried to get her to take off her pants.

“During this time, the suspect placed his cell phone in a position to record the incident, and escalated his sexual behavior,” the Joplin Police Department said in a release, per KAKE. “The victim was able to divert the attack by faking a medical emergency and asking for an ambulance.”

Price later drove the teen to another location before he ordered her to get out of the car, according to the affidavit. After she was dropped off, the teen said she messaged Price on Snapchat and asked him to send a photo of himself. However, he declined her request.

Once the teen was left by herself, she went to police and showed investigators screenshots of her conversation with Price and his Snapchat username that she obtained during the scary incident. Police then used his social media and phone records to name Price as a suspect. He was eventually located and arrested on Tuesday, January 6.

Price works as a pastor at Lost Souls Ministry in Oswego, Kansas, according to KODE. He was likely in Joplin at the time of the incident because the ministry also operates a church in that town.

Following his arrest, employees of the church confirmed to KODE that Price had been suspended amid the ongoing investigation. The employees also confirmed that they have spoken to Price and reviewed court records.

Price is currently being held in the Joplin City Jail on a $100,000 cash only bail. A court date into the matter has not yet been publicly shared.

It is not currently clear if Prince has entered a plea or retained legal representation following his arrest.

Priest From Kerala’s Syro-Malabar Church Arrested In Canada On Charges Of Sexual Crimes Against Minors

A 60-year-old Catholic priest from Kerala, India, has been arrested and charged in Canada with sexual offences involving children under the age of 16, prompting his immediate removal from pastoral duties.

Father James Cherickal, a priest of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church hailing from Kozhikode, Kerala, was arrested by the Peel Regional Police on 18 December 2025. He faces one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference, which in Canadian law, refers to sexual crimes committed against children under 16 years of age.

According to a statement issued by the Archdiocese of Toronto on 20 December 2025, the arrest followed an allegation of misconduct against Cherickal, who was serving as the pastor of St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Brampton at the time. The Archdiocese stated it learned of the allegation and subsequently cooperated with the police investigation.

“Following our protocols and procedures relating to allegations of misconduct, Fr Cherickal has been removed from pastoral ministry,” the Archdiocese’s statement read. It further emphasized the legal principle of presumed innocence, noting, “As with any accused in our Canadian legal system, he is considered innocent until proven guilty and entitled to due process.” The statement also affirmed that the Archdiocese views any such accusation “as an urgent matter that requires serious attention.”

In the wake of the arrest, St. Jerome’s Church announced the cancellation of Holy Mass services from 25 December 2025, through 3 January 2026.

Father Cherickal’s ecclesiastical background ties him to the Syro-Malabar diocese of Thamarassery in Kerala. The Syro-Malabar Church, headquartered in Kochi, is the largest Eastern Catholic church in India and is in full communion with Rome. He was deputed to Canada approximately three decades ago.

Records from the Archdiocese of Toronto indicate that Cherickal had been ministering in various parishes within the archdiocese since 1997. He had taken up his post at St. Jerome’s Church in Brampton just last year. During his time in Canada, he also served the Syro-Malabar mission established for the significant community of Catholic migrants from Kerala residing in the country.

Cherickal is part of a substantial cohort of priests from Kerala who have been sent abroad to address clerical shortages, particularly in nations with large Keralite diaspora communities such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Prior to his assignment in Canada, he served in various roles within the Diocese of Thamarassery in Kerala.

The Peel Regional Police investigation is ongoing. The Archdiocese of Toronto has not released further details on the specific nature or timeline of the alleged crimes, citing the active legal proceedings.

The above incident is not uncommon especially among churches across the world.
